Rainy day adventures

This morning we woke up to the sound of pouring rain. 🙁 Not the sort of noise we were hoping for!

But a bit of rain wasn't going to stop the Ross family adventure. We just had a change in plans!

Luckily, there were umbrellas in our apartment, so we headed off for morning tea. Budapest has a famous cafe, called Gerbeaud, which Clint and I visited when we were last here 11years ago. It's located in a very opulent building and has some amazing cakes.

We each ordered something different, so we could share. Dobos torta for Mel, Emile torta for Clint, a rich chocolate mousse cake for Angus and Ezsterhazy torta for Ella. They were all delicious.

After we were caked up, we set out to explore. Being so wet, there weren't many people around. We went to Saint Stephen's church (Szent Istvan bazilika) and climbed the 302 stairs to the top of the tower. What a great view, even with the rain!

We then wandered down Andrassy Utca, one of the main roads in Budapest and where the expensive shops and boutiques are.

At the end of Andrassy Utca is Heroes Square, a large square with statues to commemorate the arrival of Magyar tribes to Hungary. Unfortunately they were setting up for a concert, so we couldn't really see the statues amongst the stands and seating.

Nearby was the Vajdahunyad Castle and lake, which freezes over in winter and is used for ice skating. Next time, we want to come back when it's cold!

After all that exploring, we were in need of some lunch. We found a small cafe and had a delicious chicken noodle soup, garlic and potato langos and chicken filled with ham and cheese. Yummy!

With full bellies, we headed back to the apartment to dry off and have a relaxing afternoon.
